Schwartz leaves door open for Stafford to start Sunday

ALLEN PARK -- Coach Jim Schwartz did not make an announcement today (Wednesday) on whether Matthew Stafford or Shaun Hill will start at quarterback on Sunday at the N.Y. Giants.

“It’s probably an indication that Matt is making good progress and it’s probably too early to make any announcements,’’ Schwartz said.

The coach would not be more specific about Stafford’s progress.

The last four Wednesdays Schwartz has announced that Hill would start. Stafford separated his throwing shoulder in the opener at Chicago and has not played since.

Reportedly he has been throwing on his own the past two weeks. In a radio interview on Monday Stafford said it felt “pretty good.” He politely declined to talk to the media on Wednesday.

Calvin Johnson, who injured his right shoulder early in the fourth quarter on Sunday, said his issue is range of motion. He was on the practice field, but did not have any balls thrown his way. It’s uncertain if he will be ready to play against the Giants.

“It’s just how it feels come Sunday,’’ Johnson said.
